Here's the scary part about history:

It doesn't announce itself when it's about to repeat.

Let's take a stab at explaining fascism in a non-political way:

Picture a struggling local sports team. A new coach arrives promising to restore its "golden age." Their passion seems inspiring at first – but watch how quickly things change. Team practices become mandatory pep rallies. Players must chant team slogans or be labeled "traitors." Anyone questioning the coach is pushed out. Those who show blind loyalty are rewarded. The team starts winning, but through fear and force, not joy or community spirit

This is how fascism works at a national level. It's a form of extreme nationalism that builds a cult around an all-powerful leader, who vows to protect their loyal subjects from those who are racially inferior and the enemy within. The following are the warning signs of fascism:

01

Powerful Nationalism

Constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other propaganda

02

Human Rights Disdain

Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, human rights are often set aside

03

Enemies as Scapegoats

People are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived threat

04

Military Supremacy

Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of resources

05

Rampant Sexism

Traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion, homosexuality, and divorce

06

Controlled Media

Media is directly controlled by the government or indirectly through regulation and sympathetic leaders

07

National Security

Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses

08

Religion & Government

Governments use the most common religion to manipulate public opinion

09

Corporate Power

The industrial and business aristocracy often puts government leaders into power

10

Labor Power Suppressed

Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government

11

Intellectual Disdain

Free expression in the arts and academic world is openly attacked

12

Crime & Punishment

Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power

13

Rampant Cronyism

Friends and associates of those in power appoint each other to government positions

14

Fraudulent Elections

Elections are manipulated by smear campaigns, even the use of bribes, and false arrests

These elements were originally identified by Lawrence Britt in his study of fascist regimes. While not all elements need to be present for fascism to exist, the presence of multiple elements should be cause for concern.

Read through those again.

Think about it.

Do any of these traits sound familiar?

Because President-elect Trump checks a lot of these boxes, it's important to understand what fascism is and isn't.

Scroll down to see examples of Trump exemplifying these traits, one-by-one, in videos. His words. Untouched. There is a lot at stake here and knowledge is power.
